Wednesday September 28 Quiz
The quiz this Wednesday will cover material from last Monday September 19. Specifically look for word problems that involve:
- Average rate of change
- This might be average velocity or average growth rate in an application
- Instantaneous rate of change (ie: the derivative at a point)
- This might be the velocity or growth rate in an application
- Computing the equation of the tangent line
- Rate of change for the...
- growth rate
- velocity
When I ask you about the rate of change of the growth rate we're look at the the second derivative at a point.
The same is true for velocity. In fact, the rate of change of velocity has the name acceleration.
To study I suggest you review the problems from our lecture notes last Monday (September 19) and the problems from the WebAssign assignment Derivatives II.
You can also find examples/practice problems Section 1.8 in the textbook. (I really like the homework problem number 12---we did this in class together. Recall that the graph in Figure 8 depicts the position of the vehicle.)
Good luck!
Homework: Sign of the second derivative
Below I have posted homework due Monday September 26 at the start of class.
I have posted a solution to number 1, so that you have an example to work from. Please complete and turn in a solution for number 2.
Homework: sign-of-the-second-derivative
Solution for number 1: solution-for-number-1
Help with Derivatives II
Below I have worked out an solution for a problem that is very similar to number 5 from your Derivatives II WebAssign homework. Notice that the due date is Monday September 26.
Solution: help-with-number-5
Extra Credit Opportunity
Below I have posted a worksheet that is worth 10 extra credit points (!!) toward your quiz grade. The assignment is due at 6:02 PM on Wednesday September 21.
In the worksheet, you will be asked to compute the first and second derivative. You must show all of your work. I have specific instructions for the kind of work I'm looking for--so please read carefully.
Submissions without work will receive no credit.
In fact, you can check your final answer below!
Our quiz on Wednesday will have very similar problems. This worksheet is a great study guide.
